Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
The Health Insurance Portability and Accounting Act (HIPAA) of 1996 is a federal law (Public Law 104-191) that has set national privacy standards for protected health information. The standards affect individuals as well as health care providers and related business associates. The general public has learned that HIPAA enables employees to obtain health insurance from new employers despite pre-existing conditions and that health information should be private. FEMS employees and health care providers uphold HIPAA policies and procedures when providing emergency medical care services.
